Revisiting beginnings: a look back at our first RoundTable

When the JCF Mythological RoundTable® Group of Sarasota first convened in May of 2014, we talked about the influence that the teachings of Joseph Campbell had on each of us, and how we envisioned the MRT helping us to shape a “new mythology.” Some of the members of this MRT have more experience than others in learning about the monomyth and the “masks of God” that Campbell described, but each of us seemed to connect with an inner knowing that all of life’s vantage points offer a glimpse of a shared ultimate Truth. Even with those who came in the following months, we all find ourselves drawn to the exploration of the human journey, trying to find our way back to Truth and get beyond the veil of the material world.

The call of Campbell to become your own hero, to create the life you want for yourself, is echoed by teachers of all traditions, challenging us to be the change we want to see in the world. We realize that by bettering ourselves, we contribute to the betterment of the world. By saving yourself, you save the world.

By fully embracing life and following our bliss, we expand our influence as a vital person and vitalize the human story, taking our common experience to new levels of success. By appreciating our universal connection of humanity, we meet at the RoundTable not as some sort of 12-step thing that comes with prerequisites, but as a place where we can simply explore the journey that we all take and help light the way to the more fortuitous paths. It doesn’t have to include a huge epiphany every time, but simply a way to get beyond the “isms” so that we can get down to the “is.”
